Roger Crates

Hello: A little about me, I am older man and I must admit that's alright with me, you see I actually enjoy being older as I am not tied into a nine to five existence and although the old arthritis has made a few changes to my body and the life it supports, I enjoy my time on the planet enormously. I do this by laughing a lot, sometimes inappropriately, though as time goes by I am curtailing great gusts of laughter when I, and it seems only I, see something hilarious around me. Inapproprate or not, the laughter and some sadness along the way led me to write, I enjoy it so much I am busier than ever I have been banging away at my computer, which to me is simply a really really fancy typewriter. I use it to write Travel Blogs under the banner of Where's Roger on my website www. shortstories-funnystories.com the blogs take two forms, Where's Roger, which is about my adventures as I travel around Australia on a motor scooter, what, a motor scooter you say, YES a motor scooter, I love riding and I am a big man and the wonderful artificial bits and pieces that hold me together still can't allow me to throw my tree stump legs over a motor bike, so a scooter it is. The other blog is Roger's Column in which I write what I grandiously call Essays on social issues and pretty much whatever occurs to me. I try to handle them with the humour and insight of an (almost) lifetime of living Australia. I also write short stories (Motley Stories Volume 1) and I have penned an Autobiography, Love, Life and Wet Fish Dancing all available on http:www.shortstories-funnystories.com See you there Roger

MANLY, MACHISMO AND THE MURK

The entrance to Sydney Harbour is flanked by two great sandstone bulwarks that are called somewhat obviously South Head and North Head. South Head is the shorter of the twins and although not as high above the pounding water below is a favourite place for some sad and disturbed folk to hurl themselves off.

The Border Ranges

When the early settlers came north overland they began to find something truly wonderful, the Australian coastal hinterlands. I can imagine that the usual method was to follow the path of easiest resistance or as was the case in the very early exploration of the NSW interior and the intrepid ones ‘followed the ridges’.

I knew Roy Cromp

Seeing that it is that time of the year, I think a Christmas story is in order. It just so happens I coundn’t sleep so well. I woke up early this morning so I had better haul bones, get out of bed and hit the computer to tell you the tale, is it a tale? Well not really, but it has kept me from the sleep of the just.

A CROWN OF LORIKEETS

A CROWN OF LORIKEETS (CURRUMBIN) Written By: Roger Crates - Dec• 22•10 WHERE'S ROGER? A CROWN OF LORIKEETS AUDIO LINK I live very near to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and I go past it at least a couple of times a month. Like most people I don’t take all that much notice of what goes on in my own backyard. The wildlife sanctuary is pretty much in that category.

Where's Roger

Hidden away from the dazzled eyes of the Tourists to the Gold Coast and just a few miles inland is the hinterland district. It is quite natural when one thinks of Surfers Paradise and the Glitter Strip, we think of glimmering city scapes, bulging brown muscles amid bikini clad lovelies. That is what the focus is after all. So the area towering above and a little way inland remains a partially hidden and partially known treasure.
