Be Positive & Pace Yourself
Being in the right frame of mind is just as important as your physical condition. This means trying to keep calm during frustrating moments and leaving enough leeway in your itinerary so that you won’t feel frustrated if something were to go wrong. We also recommend adopting the mantra “short steps, deep breaths”.
Protect Your Gear
Trekking gear is not cheap, so it’s important that you have adequately protected it with a sturdy kit bag. These are easily replaceable after coming into contact with thorns, rocks and the landscape in general – your expensive rucksack is not. It’s also recommended that you don’t keep your photography gear out – it won’t like the dust.
Keep the Essentials On Hand
You should always carry a weatherproof jacket, a dry pair of socks and a spare sunhat (or even two) on your person when trekking in the Himalayas. Your bag won’t actually be traveling with you, so it’s important to be prepared. We also recommend buying an umbrella to protect against sun and rain, as well as your modesty.
Be Courteous & Flash a Smile
Get into the habit of saying Salam, Namaste on Julay to the people you pass whilst trekking in the Himalayas. Most of the locals will be happy to meet you, but it’s important that you respect their customs. Don’t take anyone’s photo without their permission (this can cause offence in some regions) and always be polite.
Respect the Environment
Keep in mind that even the smallest careless action can be disastrous to the local ecosystem. Don’t start any fires or pollute the water sources. It’s also a legal requirement that all rubbish is carried out with you, so ensure that the campsite is completely clean before leaving. Your tour guide will help to ensure that the environment is protected.
Medical Issues Do Matter
Whilst you should certainly bring along essential medication, you should be selective about bringing any others. You will actually find that many brands can be purchased in India without a prescription, so if you do need something it should be easy to pick up. You should also avoid treating the locals, as you’re likely doing more harm than good.
