The world of art is known to a lot of people from the renaissance period until today. Peter Max or Peter Max Finkelstein is one of the most popular living artists as of today. He was born on October 19, 1937 as a Jewish American and became popular for his “cosmic brownies” style in the 1960’s. As of today, he is considered as a pop culture icon where he uses bold colors, inspiring images and unique delivery and art piece that touches and inspires Americans in all forms of life. But do you know that Peter Max became famous first when his posters were posted in the walls of the college dorms in America?

Peter Max and his works

It was in the 1950’s when he had his formal training of arts at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan where he first worked with figure drawings and he studied anatomy. Then, he worked with Frank Reilly who is considered to be one of the masters of light and shadow in the field of arts.

In the 1960’s after his trainings in arts, he owned a small studio along with his friend; Tom Daly called as the Daly and Max Studio. They started out with artworks in books and advertising along with another friend, Don Rubbo. Then Peter Max was commissioned to make the Meade Lux Lewis which won awards for his inspirational work where he use photographic images to make a collage which is a unique piece of graphic art that time.

A decade after, his art works were found in an exhibition which opened a lot of doors for him. This is where more opportunities come his way when he was commissioned to do the first 10 cents postage stamp by the US Postal Service, official artist for major events like the Grammy Awards, Super Bowl, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was commissioned by other 72 corporations making him a household name. More than that, he also covered the Life Magazine and an eight-page article and appeared on many night shows like Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and the Ed Sullivan Show.

More than being a household name, he was also commissioned by 6 U.S Presidents where his works are not displayed in various U.S embassies and the Presidential Libraries. And as of the latest, Peter Max was recently commissioned to design another hallmark for the newest ship called the Norwegian Breakaway. This is a cruise line for Norwegians which will find a homeport all year round in New York City which happens to be the artist’s hometown. This project is his first time to design and paint a ship and he added that seeing his designs out in the sea is a dream come true for the artist.

His life today

At present, Peter Max is living in New York City with wife, Mary and he owned about 36 Chevrolet Corvettes, his collection here he bought one model for each year from 1953 to 1988 but he seemed to have forgotten to buy since then.
