Imagine an enormous surf wave over 100 meters long, gazing down at you as if it has been frozen in time. ‘Impossible’ you might think to yourself. Well such an unbelievable place exists in Hyden, famously known as the Wave Rock. It can well defined as a boating surf wave of multihued granite that seems like it is about to collide onto the bush beneath. It is undeniable one of most recognizable landforms of Australia. These tinted stripes appear to be hand-painted, adding up to the wave-like outlook. One cannot help feeling the ancient rock’s power while standing beneath it, poised to collapse over you. It is definitely worth observing Wave Rock at different hours of the day, as the varying sunlight alters its appearance and colors. Tourists will observe dark shaded streaks that are actually algae, developing on the surface as black stains which convert to brown as dry season approaches.
There are further examples of equally spectacular of granite "waves" in the area of Hyden area. Rock formations contained by Wave Rock Reserve include King Rocks, Camel Peak, Camel Peaks and The Humps. These are the biggest and widely acknowledged. However, all in all there are a couple hundred spread around the central area of wheat belt.
While being an inspiring tourist attraction, the rock has also been transformed into a catchment for water supplies of the town, with a concrete wall almost a foot-high. This wall which is around the upper rim directs rainfall water into a storage dam. It was built in 1951 by the Public Works Department in the year 1951.
