Sitting high on the high altitude of 2133 meters above sea level Kodaikanal has pocketed an area of 21.45 sq.km in the beautiful Palani Hills of Dindigal District of the State of Tamil Nadu, India.
Some of its Major Attractions are Star-Shaped Lake, Massive Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves, a Wonderful Botanical Garden called, Briant Park, a Magnificent Rock which looks like the Nose of Dolphin called, Dolphin’s Nose, etc.
Lake
It is also known as Kodai Lake, a man-made lake, located in the Town itself, 3 km from Bus Stand. It spreads over an area of 60 acres and is surrounded by fine tar roads of 5 km. It is star-shaped, centrally located and is surrounded by lush green hills of Palani Hill Range which is the main watershed of lake. An earthen dam has been constructed to make it look like a marshy structure. Its Boat Club provides various types of boats on hire. You can walk, sail, and ride around it. You can also have horse rides, cycle rides, pony rides, etc.
Pillar Rocks.
Located 8 km from Lake they are made up of three massive granite rocks having heights even upto 400 feet that enable you to have a spectacular view of surroundings from there. The cool dark environments of Rocks tempt you to seek shelters in their shadows.
They have also hidden nooks, corners, etc, to please the adventurist in you.
Also there you will find some inscrutable chambers between two pillars called ‘Devil’s Kitchen’.
Guna Caves or Devil’s Kitchen
They are made popular by Tamil Movie ‘Guna’. They are bat-infested chambers among three gigantic boulders called Pillar Rocks. Deep narrow ravines are now closed to public due to the tragic deaths of twelve youths a few years back. These dangerous caves are now protected and therefore they can be seen only from far away locations.
Briant Park
East of Lake and 500 meters from Bus Stand you would find a 20.5 acres Botanical Garden called Briant Park. With 325 species of trees, shrubs, cactuses, etc, it is treasure-house of stunning flowers. A large section of it is dedicated to over 700 varieties of roses. You would also find there a nearly double century-old 1857 Eucalyptus Tree and a Bodhi Tree.
Located 8 km from Bus Stand it is a flat rock projecting over a wonderful chasm of 6600 feet deep.
