The Attractions of Marayoor, ‘The Hidden Land’.

The name of the place ‘Marayoor’ is derived from the  Malayalam Language Words, ‘mara’ and ‘ur’ which mean ‘hidden’ and ‘land’ respectively. That means Marayoor  is a’Hidden Land’  It is also spelt out ‘Marayur’.’Malayalam’ is the Language of Kerala State.

It is a Rain ShadowVillage located between Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Kannandevan Tea Plantations.  It is situated on the Eastern Slopes of Western Mountain Passes at the elevation of 3200 ft, 40 km from  Munnar on Udumalpet  Road in Idukki District of Kerala State, India.  Its wind is so strong that it can even fly you or any strong person to and in air.

Its Main Attractions are Sandalwood Plantations, Rajiv Gandhi Children’s’ Park,  Jaggery or ‘ Sharkara’ Making Units, Dolmen or ‘Muniyaras’, etc.

Sandalwood Plantations

It is the only place in Kerala  with natural growths of Sandalwood Trees. In comparison with other high rainfall areas of Kerala its less rainfall makes it an ideal place to their abundant growths.   The Plantations occupy an area of 95 sq km with around 65,000 trees of high qualities. You can purchase Liquid Gold Oil extracted from the  roots of these trees.

Rajiv Gandhi Childen’s Park

It is located in the town itself.  It is a Calm or Serene Park spread out  an area of over one hector.  Its novelty and distinguishing feature is it is carved out under the  canopy of a single banyan tree.

Small Jaggery Production Units

Its Jaggery is famous for its quality as it is the Best Quality produced in the whole of India.  You could therefore find here Small Jaggery Production Units that produce Dark Brown Sugar Ball made out of condensed sugar cane juice called Round Jaggery Ball or ‘Undasarkara’ in Malayalam.

Dolmen or ‘Muniyaras’                                                                                                                      

Dolmen attract the attentions of not only Tourists but also those of Historians, Anthropologists, Archaeologists, etc, as they prove out the existence of Stone Age Civilization as old as 10,000 B.C. in its backyards. They are therefore the Most Important Attraction of Marayoor as they catapult it to one of the Most Coveted Towns of Ancient Stone Age Civilization.

Located one km from Marayur on way to Kanthalloor, Dolmen are Burial Chambers made up of Four Stones fixed on their edges and then covered by another or Fifth Stone called Cap Stone.   Some of these  Chambers have quadrangle walls with Roof  or Cap Stones to close them up. The Siva Temple or Thenkasinathan  Temple at Kovilkadavu near Pambar River Bank is dotted  with a number of  dolmen.
