Pinnawela, about 80 km northeast of Colombo, is regarded as the biggest herd of captive elephants in the world. In the 1800's an estimated 30,000 elephants raomed the island of Sri Lanka, today the number is around 4000.
This conversation project is an effort to provide a home for orphaned elephants, Some110 people are employed to care for the elephants and14,000 kgs of food are needed every day. The orphnage can be visted on your way to Kandy and is a must if you are visiting the Island.
Sri lanka also has a few wild life sancturaies where herds of wild elephants roam.
