No matter what you call it, if you live north of the equator you’ll know that it is a long, long way to Australia. So, when you get here, you should not be surprised to find that getting from A to B in Australia can also be a long, long way. Take a look at the matrix below to get an idea of how far it is between Australia’s major cities, and some of the minor ones as well.
It doesn't matter who you are, you can’t see Australia in two weeks, even if you fly – and it’s much better to hire a car and drive anyway.
So, pick up a rental car and get up close and personal with the scenery, the people and the animals that make Australia what it is.
The matrix below shows the driving distances between the major cities and towns in Australia.

So, if you are planning a driving holiday from Sydney to Perth, be sure to pack a change of clothes, a toothbrush and a sandwich, and allow at least a week to complete the trip.
Oh, and check out www.toiletmap.gov.au before you leave, in case you find yourself 'caught short'.
Seriously, if you are driving through central Australia in summer, or even in winter in the north, remember that the temperature will climb well over 40 degrees C so be prepared with plenty of water and fuel. If you are planning on getting off the main highways you should also tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Check www.bom.gov.au for live weather information.
